Valve’s final FRL update resolves HDMI 2.1 compatibility issues.

Valve has fully resolved the Steam Machine’s HDMI 2.1 compatibility issues, with a final FRL update on the way to unlock full 4K 240Hz support. Originally, the system’s HDMI port was labeled as HDMI 2.0 even though the hardware could handle many HDMI 2.1 features. The limitation came from Linux support on AMD graphics cards, which SteamOS relies on.

SteamOS architect Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed that extensive collaboration with AMD has fixed the problem. Steam Machines now offer HDMI 2.1 variable refresh rate on both FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR displays. He noted that the current setup tops out at 4K 120Hz using compression, but an update will add 4K 144Hz uncompressed and 4K 240Hz support with Display Stream Compression.

For gamers with compatible monitors, the upcoming update will bring the system in line with the latest display standards. Steam Machines also include a DisplayPort 1.4 output, which already supports 4K 144Hz and 4K 240Hz with DSC. The FRL patch will close the gap for HDMI connections, letting high-refresh 4K displays run at their full potential.

Do you plan to take advantage of the full 4K 240Hz support when the update arrives?
