What Does a Video Game Producer Actually Do?

A video game producer helps a team turn its plans into work that can actually be delivered. The role connects people, schedules, resources, and decisions. It is not simply the job of having the original idea or telling everyone else what to make.

The title covers different responsibilities across studios. A producer helping a small team fund a game may have a broader business role than a producer coordinating one stream of content inside a large, ongoing project.

The job changes with the size of the team

The ScreenSkills producer profile describes work that can include securing funding, bringing staff on board, negotiating supplier contracts, and working with a publisher. Producers also collaborate with design, art, and programming leads before production begins.

ScreenSkills draws an important distinction: larger companies may assign day-to-day project management to a separate project manager, while producers at smaller companies may handle it themselves. A familiar title does not guarantee an identical job description.

For gamers reading a credit list, that means “producer” needs context. The studio, department, and part of the project matter more than a single label.

A studio example shows the coordination work

A Riot Game Producer II role for League of Legends cosmetics provides a narrower example. The description covers planning and delivery tracking across Singapore-based work, coordination with Los Angeles and external partners, and collaboration with team leads, product staff, and quality assurance.

Quality assurance, often shortened to QA, is the testing and quality discipline.

The listing also calls for spotting delivery risks early and helping teams adjust when plans change.

What the production terms mean

Job descriptions often compress that work into a few terms. Here is a plain-language reading of the planning language in Riot’s example:

TermMeaning for the work
ScopeThe work the team agrees to include.
MilestoneAn agreed checkpoint or target.
DependencyWork that relies on something else being ready.
Delivery riskA possible problem that could prevent the plan from working.

Consider a hypothetical character update. An animation may depend on a finished model, while testing needs a usable version in the game. A producer can help make those handoffs visible and raise a problem before several people are left waiting. The example illustrates coordination, not a fixed workflow every studio follows.

Assistant producers do practical production work

The assistant-producer profile from ScreenSkills describes support for the project’s daily running. Tasks may include organizing game assets, helping with schedules, checking deadlines, and supporting submissions to publishers.

The profile also describes work around localization, which adapts a game for different countries, and activities such as demos or press visits near the end of development. An assistant title does not mean the person spends the day watching someone else make decisions.

ScreenSkills warns that the most junior role in the production department is not always an entry-level job. People may arrive with development experience, a testing background, or production experience from another industry. Read the actual requirements rather than assuming “assistant” means no experience is needed.

What to look for beyond the title

If you are curious about production as a behind-the-scenes career, compare responsibilities before comparing titles. Useful questions include:

  • Which team or part of the game would the producer support?
  • Does the role include budgets and contracts, daily delivery, or both?
  • Who makes creative decisions, and who does the producer work with?
  • What experience does the employer actually require?

We see production as work that makes collaboration practical. A good plan needs more than a date on a calendar: people need to know what is expected, what they are waiting for, and when a decision is needed. The clearest producer description explains that responsibility for a particular team.
