The Steam Machine price is finally official, and it starts at $1,049. That is a lot of money for a small box meant to sit under your TV, especially when the PlayStation 5 Pro costs less.

Valve’s new system is not trying to be a normal console. It is a compact gaming PC built for the living room, with access to games you already own and a more open setup than PlayStation or Xbox. Still, gamers should know exactly what they are paying for before joining the reservation list.

🧾 Steam Machine Price and Configurations

Valve is selling four versions of the new device.

ModelPrice
512GB storage$1,049
512GB storage with controller$1,128
2TB storage$1,349
2TB storage with controller$1,428

The controller bundle adds $79. The 2TB version adds more room for large modern games, but it costs $300 more than the base model.

For comparison, the base version costs more than a PS5 Pro, which makes this a premium option from the start.

💰 Why It Costs So Much

Valve is not using the normal console strategy of selling hardware at a loss and making money later through locked-down stores, subscriptions, or exclusive games.

Instead, Valve says the price is close to the cost of the parts and manufacturing. Memory and storage shortages also pushed component prices higher, which made it harder to keep the system affordable.

That makes sense on paper, but it does not make $1,049 easier to spend.

Gamers are paying for a compact PC, a simple TV-friendly setup, and more freedom than a console. The question is whether that combination is worth the premium.

🎮 Who the Machine Fits Best

This device makes the most sense for gamers who already have a large Steam library and want to play it comfortably on a TV.

It could be a good fit if you:

  • Want a cleaner setup than a full gaming PC tower
  • Already own a lot of PC games
  • Prefer a controller-first experience
  • Want more flexibility than a locked console
  • Like the idea of a small living room PC

It may be harder to recommend for gamers starting from zero. At this price, you could buy a strong console, games, extra storage, and still have money left over.

The Steam Machine is useful because it brings PC gaming to the couch without making you build a desktop or deal with Windows every time you want to play. But value depends heavily on the game library you already own.

📅 How Reservations Work

Valve opened registration before sales begin. The first signups will be randomized on June 25, and the first purchase emails are expected to go out on June 29.

To join the early reservation group, your account needs to be in good standing and show a Steam purchase from before April 27, 2026. Valve is also limiting signups to one per household to slow down resellers.

There are separate lists for each storage option, so pick carefully. A reservation gives you a chance to buy later, not an instant order confirmation.

🕹️ Is It Worth Waiting For?

The base model is expensive, but it does offer something consoles do not: a small, flexible PC that can use your existing games without locking you into one platform.

For gamers with years of purchases already attached to their account, that can make the cost easier to understand. For everyone else, it is smart to compare it with a PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, or a custom PC before spending over $1,000.

Would $1,049 fit your gaming setup?

I’ll be buying one myself, so stay tuned for a full hands-on review soon.
