PS5 QSSR Explained: How Sony’s New AI Upscaling Works
Sony has brought AI upscaling to the standard PS5 through a new technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability without requiring a PS5 Pro. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to support it.
What QSSR does on PS5
QSSR uses AI to rebuild a sharper image from a lower-resolution game image. Sony describes it as a faster, lighter version of the same general approach behind PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, on PS5 Pro.
The standard PS5 has less graphics power available for AI upscaling than PS5 Pro. Sony says QSSR works around that limit with a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned specifically for PS5 hardware.
For gamers, the goal is cleaner fine detail and a more stable picture while a game is moving. Sony has not said QSSR makes the standard PS5 equal to PS5 Pro. PSSR remains the higher-end option on the Pro console.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first two confirmed QSSR games. Sony released patches for both games on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as another graphics option on the standard PS5.
Insomniac Games says QSSR improves pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine, including detailed areas such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sucker Punch Productions says the technology helps resolve fine details in Ghost of Yōtei’s characters and environments.
QSSR vs. PSSR on PS5 Pro
| Feature | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Console | PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Uses AI upscaling | Yes | Yes |
| Main goal | Better detail and image stability on PS5 | Higher-end AI upscaling on PS5 Pro |
| Confirmed games | Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yōtei | Supported PS5 Pro games |
Sony developed QSSR through Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. The company says the technology is a new performance tier rather than a replacement for PSSR.
More PS5 games can use QSSR later
QSSR is not limited to Sony’s first two supported games. Sony plans to offer the QSSR library broadly to PlayStation developers, so more games can add support in the future.
Support still depends on individual developers adding QSSR to their games. Sony has not announced a full list of future titles or a system-wide switch that automatically applies QSSR to every PS5 game.
PS5 QSSR FAQ
Does QSSR work on the regular PS5?
Yes. QSSR was designed to bring AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5. Games still need specific QSSR support from their developers.
Do you need a PS5 Pro for QSSR?
No. QSSR is for the standard PS5. PS5 Pro uses PSSR, which Sony describes as its higher-end AI upscaling technology.
Does every PS5 game use QSSR?
No. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first confirmed games. Developers can use the QSSR library for more games later.
For now, gamers can try QSSR in the supported graphics options for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei after installing their latest PS5 updates.
