Switch 2 Gets a Replaceable Battery in Europe
A Nintendo Switch 2 with a replaceable battery is coming to (Only) Europe this autumn. Nintendo says the revised model will keep the same functionality as the current console while changing the internal battery design to meet upcoming European battery rules.
The updated hardware will roll out across Nintendo of Europe territories, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and more. Nintendo has not announced this revised version for the United States, Japan, or other regions outside its Europe territory list.
🔋 The Switch 2 Battery Revision Arrives This Autumn
Nintendo lists autumn 2026 as the earliest Nintendo Store release window for the revised Switch 2 console.
The new model will have a 5,172mAh battery, compared with the current model’s 5,220mAh battery. That is about 1% less battery capacity.
The revised Switch2 will weigh about 411g, around 10g more than the current 401g model. With the updated Joy-Con 2 controllers attached, it will weigh about 548g, around 14g more than the current 534g setup.
Nintendo has not announced a new display, faster performance, extra storage, or a battery-life estimate for the revised console. The company says there is no difference in functionality between the current hardware and the versions with replaceable batteries.
🎮 Updated Joy-Con 2 Controllers Come With the Console
The revised Switch 2 will include Joy-Con 2 controllers with batteries that owners can replace.
Nintendo plans to sell updated Joy-Con 2 controllers separately this winter. The battery capacity will remain the same, but each controller will be slightly heavier:

Nintendo says the exact timing may change based on manufacturing, distribution, and stock in each country.
🕹️ More Switch 2 Accessories Are Changing
Nintendo will also update several Switch 2 accessories for the same battery rules.
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is expected this winter with a smaller 897mAh battery, down from 1,070mAh. It will weigh about 228g, which is around 7g lighter than the current 235g controller.
Nintendo’s N64 controller for Nintendo Switch will receive its revision in early 2027. Its battery capacity will stay the same, while its weight will increase by about 1g.
The GameCube controller for Switch 2 is also expected in early 2027. Its battery capacity will increase from 500mAh to 525mAh, while its weight will rise from about 210g to 215g.
🛒 Nintendo Store Orders Will Be Random
Nintendo says the revised products will replace current versions on a rolling basis. Once the existing model sells out on Nintendo Store, the updated version will take its place.
Gamers will not be able to choose between the current model and the battery-revision model through Nintendo Store. Retailers may handle stock differently, so Nintendo recommends checking with individual stores for availability.
Nintendo also plans to sell battery replacement kits for the revised hardware through Nintendo Store in Europe.
⚖️ The February 2027 Battery Deadline
The updates are tied to European battery regulations that take effect in mid-February 2027. The rules require portable electronic products covered by the regulation to allow batteries to be removed and replaced during the product’s life.
Nintendo is revising Switch 2 hardware rather than removing it from sale in Europe. The original Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Model are not getting battery revisions and will stop being supplied to European retailers in mid-February 2027.
