Steam Frame Costs $1,059 and Includes Half-Life: Alyx

Valve has revealed the Steam Frame price and opened reservations for its new standalone VR headset.

Steam Frame starts at $1,059

Steam Frame will cost $1,059 for the 256GB model and $1,299 for the 1TB model in the United States. Both versions include the headset, tracked controllers, and the USB wireless dongle used for direct PC VR streaming.

The headset also has a microSD card slot, so gamers can add storage beyond the built-in 256GB or 1TB. Valve is selling a separate $59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit with a top strap, controller hand straps, and an extended light blocker.

Steam Frame runs SteamOS and is built for both standalone VR and wireless PC VR. Our earlier Steam Frame overview covers the headset’s broader hardware and software setup.

Half-Life: Alyx runs standalone

Valve has created a native ARM version of Half-Life: Alyx that runs directly on Steam Frame without a PC. Valve says eye-tracked foveated rendering and other SteamVR and graphics work helped make the standalone version possible.

Every Steam Frame includes Half-Life: Alyx for buyers who do not already own the game. The original PC version remains available on Steam.

Valve has also tested 70 other VR games that earned its Steam Frame Verified label, including Beat Saber, SUPERHOT VR, Pistol Whip, and Walkabout Mini Golf VR.

Steam Frame reservations are open

Valve is using a reservation queue instead of a normal preorder system. Gamers can register for either storage model now.

Valve will randomize the order of existing reservations on September 17 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Reservations placed before that cutoff have the same chance of receiving an early position in the queue. Valve plans to send the first purchase offers later that day, while everyone else will move onto an automatic waitlist as more units become available.

Valve has not shared how many Steam Frame units are ready for the first wave, so a reservation does not guarantee an immediate purchase offer.
