Skyrim 15th Anniversary: Dragons, DLC, and Many Re-Releases
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim turns 15 on November 11, 2026. If you ever stopped a quest to shout a dragon off a mountain, this look back is for you.
The game launched in 2011 and has come back on new systems many times since. Here is how it started, what Bethesda added, and which versions came next.
The 2011 launch
Wikipedia says Skyrim came out worldwide on November 11, 2011 for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Bethesda Game Studios made it, Bethesda Softworks published it, and Todd Howard was the director.
The game runs on the Creation Engine. Wikipedia also says it uses the Radiant AI system first built for Oblivion.

Dragonborn and dragon shouts
You play the Dragonborn, a hero who can learn powerful shouts. Wikipedia says your character absorbs the souls of dragons to use spells called “dragon shouts” or “Thu’um.”
The main story sends you after Alduin, a dragon prophesied to destroy the world.
Early sales numbers
Wikipedia says Skyrim shipped over 7 million units in its first week. It also says the game had sold over 20 million units by June 2013.
Those are the figures from the early years. Check Bethesda for newer totals, since sales keep growing with each re-release.
Three DLC packs and the Legendary Edition
Bethesda added three expansions after launch: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. Wikipedia says the first two came to Xbox 360 a month ahead of PC and PlayStation 3.
The three packs were later bundled into the Legendary Edition, which Wikipedia says came out on June 4, 2013.
Every version since 2011
Skyrim keeps returning on new hardware. Wikipedia lists these releases:
- Special Edition (October 28, 2016): Built for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, with an upgraded engine, graphics improvements, and mod support on consoles
- Nintendo Switch (November 17, 2017): A port for Nintendo’s handheld console, released alongside a separate Skyrim VR
- Skyrim VR for Windows (April 2, 2018): Supports the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets
- Anniversary Edition (November 11, 2021): Adds 74 Creation Club items, fishing, and player-owned aquariums for PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows
- Switch Anniversary Edition (September 29, 2022): The same upgrade on Nintendo Switch
Wikipedia also says PC owners of the original game and all its DLC on Steam were offered the Special Edition for free. A Switch 2 version appears in its list with a December 9, 2025 date.
