Samsung Launches 3 New Foldables

Samsung has officially announced three new foldable phones Today. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Flip 8.

Preorders opened Now, with the U.S. release set for August 7.

The three phones cover very different needs. The Fold 8 Ultra offers Samsung’s biggest screen and strongest cameras. The regular Fold 8 uses a lighter, but wider frame made for entertainment. The Flip 8 focuses on portability with more quick access through its outside screen.

U.S. prices start at $2,099.99 for the Fold 8 Ultra, $1,899.99 for the Fold 8, and $1,199.99 for the Flip 8.

Samsung’s three new foldables compared

Samsung’s official specifications show three phones built around different screen sizes, shapes, batteries, and cameras.

All three have AMOLED displays running at up to 120Hz, 12GB of RAM on their standard configurations, Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI features, and an IP48 water-resistance rating.

The Fold 8 Ultra and Fold 8 are book-style foldables that open into tablet-like screens, while the Flip 8 folds vertically into a much smaller square shaped phone.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra offers the biggest screen

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is Samsung’s new top foldable. It is also the first Galaxy Z device to officially carry the Ultra name.

It opens up an 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 2504 × 2256 resolution and an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz.
The outside has a 6.5-inch 120Hz cover screen that works like a normal phone display.

For us gamers, the large inner screen is the main attraction.It gives gameplay more room to shine by keeping touch controls, maps, menus, subtitles, and other interface elements farther away from the action.

The Fold 8 Ultra uses the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor. Samsung says its customized chip improves CPU, graphics, and AI performance compared with the previous Fold generation, but for real gaming results will depend on heat, game support, and how long the phone can maintain its fastest speeds.

Storage and memory options include:

The 5,000mAh battery supports 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging with Wireless PowerShare.
Samsung estimates up to 27 hours of video playback and around 67% charging in 30 minutes with a compatible 45W adapter.

Samsung also expanded the cooling system with a larger graphite structure designed to move heat away from the processor. That could help during demanding task like video editing, gaming, and long multitasking sessions, but independent temperature and frame-rate tests are still needed.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a lighter and wider design

The regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 is not simply the Ultra with weaker cameras. Samsung gave it a completely different shape.

When closed, the phone has a shorter, wider 5.5-inch cover screen with a more square shaped. Opening the phone reveals a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, a resolution of 1848 × 2448, and an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz.
Samsung says the wider layout was made for videos, reading, browsing, and gaming.

The 4:3 screen could be useful for retro games, strategy titles, card games, emulators, manga, and split-screen apps. However, newer mobile games designed for taller screens may add black bars or place controls in unusual positions.

At 201g, the Fold 8 is 14g lighter than the Ultra. The lighter weight could make the regular Fold more comfortable during long sessions, especially when using touch controls instead of placing the phone in a controller mount.

It uses the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor as the Ultra and offers:

The regular Fold 8 may be the more comfortable model for games and entertainment. The problem is its price. At $1,899.99, it only saves $200 compared with the Ultra.

Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the pocket-friendly choice

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 takes the opposite approach. It does not try to become a small tablet. It gives users a normal 6.9-inch phone screen that folds into a compact square when it is not is use.

Its inside Dynamic AMOLED 2X display has a 1080 × 2520 resolution and an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz. The outside FlexWindow measures 4.1 inches and can run at 60Hz or 120Hz.

The FlexWindow now supports apps, widgets, notifications, Now Brief, camera controls, and selected Galaxy AI actions without opening the phone. It could be useful for changing music, checking Discord notifications, viewing messages, or controlling media between matches.

At 180g, the Flip 8 is the lightest phone in the Folding lineup.

Samsung also calls it its thinnest and lightest Flip so far.

Samsung estimates up to 31 hours of video playback and around 55% charging in 30 minutes. The smaller battery and slower charging make the Flip 8 less appealing for long sessions than either Fold model.

Its folding hinge can hold the screen at different angles, turning the Flip8 into its own stand for video calls, watching videos, following recipes, taking photos, reading guides, or using apps with a Bluetooth keyboard or controller.

The cameras also separate the three models

The Fold 8 Ultra has Samsung’s strongest camera system:

• 50MP ultrawide camera
• 10MP telephoto camera
• 3x optical zoom
• Up to 30x digital zoom
• Up to 8K video at 30 frames per second

Samsung added HDR capture at 200MP, improved low-light processing, APV video recording, and Cine LUT color controls. These tools are aimed more at photographers and content creators than gamers, but they also make the Ultra the strongest option for recording events, setups, and social videos.

The regular Fold 8 includes:

• 50MP main camera
• 50MP ultrawide camera
• Up to 10x digital zoom
• Up to 8K video at 30 frames per second

It does not have a telephoto camera.

The Flip 8 includes:

• 50MP main camera
• 12MP ultrawide camera
• Up to 10x digital zoom
• Up to 4K video at 60 frames per second

Its FlexCam design allows hands-free recording, cover-screen previews, and selfies using the main camera. Samsung also added Camcorder Grip, Zoom Rocker, Super Steady video, and Horizontal Lock.

Colors

All three are available in Graphite and Cream.

Color and storage availability may differ by carrier and country.

Samsung’s confirmed U.S. preorder offers include up to $1,200 in eligible trade-in credit or up to $200 in Samsung Credit without a trade-in. The credit must be used on other eligible Samsung products or services during checkout and cannot directly lower the phone’s price.

Purchases also include a six-month Google AI Pro trial with 5TB of cloud storage. Carrier promotions have separate trade-in, installment, and service requirements.

Important details before preordering

Samsung has confirmed the basic hardware, prices, and release information, but several questions still require independent testing.

Mobile Android Gamers should wait for reviews covering:

• Game layouts on the unusual Fold 8 screens

All three phones carry an IP48 rating. Samsung says they can survive freshwater submersion under controlled test conditions, but it does not recommend using them at beaches or pools. Water resistance can also weaken with normal wear.

Charging adapters are sold separately, and available colors, storage choices, preorder deals, and release dates may differ outside the United States.

Which Samsung foldable fits the average gamer?

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra makes the most sense for someone who wants the largest screen, strongest cameras, biggest battery, and the best hardware Samsung offers. It is also difficult to recommend purely for gaming at $2,099.99.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 may be the more comfortable entertainment device. It has the same processor, a large 120Hz display, a lighter body, and a wider shape. However, saving only $200 compared with the Ultra makes its value harder to explain.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the easiest model to carry and the least expensive. Its normal 6.9-inch screen should work with games more predictably, but the smaller battery and 25W charging make it the weakest option for long sessions.

For most gamers, none of these phones replaces a dedicated handheld. A Steam Deck, ROG Ally, console, controller, and regular flagship phone could cost less than the Fold 8 Ultra.

Samsung’s new foldables are more interesting as all-in-one phones that can also handle games, media, multitasking, and content creation. The right choice depends less on raw performance and more on whether you want a large tablet-like screen, a lighter wide screen, or a phone that folds into the smallest possible shape.
