How to Reset a DualSense Controller on PS5
If your DualSense controller stops responding or will not connect to your PS5, a reset is the first fix Sony lists. The reset takes about a minute, and you only need a pin or a similar small tool.
What You Need Before You Start
- Your DualSense controller.
- The official USB cable that came with the controller.
- A pin or a similar tool. Sony says the tool is not included.
- Your PS5 console.
How to Reset a DualSense Controller
Follow these steps in order. They match the reset steps on PlayStation Support.
- Turn off your PS5.
- Unplug the controller from its USB cable.
- Turn the controller over. Find the small hole next to the Sony logo on the back. The reset button sits inside it.
- Press and hold the reset button with your pin for at least 5 seconds. The controller resets.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable that came with it, then press the PS button.
Mistakes That Can Stop a Reset From Working
- Tapping instead of holding. The reset button needs a press of 5 seconds or longer.
- Leaving the cable plugged in. Unplug the controller before you press the button.
- Using a different cable. Sony asks you to use the official cable that came with your controller for the last step.
Sony’s page does not describe what the light bar should do after a reset. To check the fix, use the controller on the PS5 home screen and see if it responds.
What to Try If the Problem Stays
If your console still works, Sony says to update the PS5 system software to the latest version. Then try the controller again.
If you have reset the controller and still have trouble, Sony points you to its repair page. It lists five issue types:
- Button or analog stick issue
- Vibration issue
- Pairing issue
- Controller disconnects
- Battery issue
Stick drift has its own set of checks. Our guide to troubleshooting controller stick drift covers settings, cleaning, and when repair makes sense.
Before you contact Sony, write down which of the five issue types matches your controller. Picking the right one on the repair page gets you to the right help faster.
