How to Repair Game Files in Steam, Epic Games, and the EA app
A game that will not open does not always need a full reinstall. To repair game files, use the launcher that manages the installed copy: Steam calls the check Verify integrity of game files, Epic uses Verify, and the EA app uses Repair.
Start with the section for your launcher below. Close the game first, keep the launcher open during the check, and test the game again after the process finishes.
Before you run a repair
File verification checks the installed game rather than diagnosing every possible crash. Epic’s guide says damaged or different files are repaired or changed. The process can take a while, so allow time for it to finish.
- Use the launcher where your copy is installed, not another store where the same game is listed.
- If you use mods or have edited game files, back up those changes before a repair. A check that restores official files may replace your edits.
- Do not delete save folders as part of these steps. Installation files and your progress are different concerns.
How to verify game files in Steam
The current Steam route uses Installed Files. CD Projekt Red’s recently updated instructions confirm the same menu path.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the installed game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish checking the installation, then launch the game again.
Allow several minutes for the check. A completed verification is a useful test of the installation, not proof that every cause of a crash has been fixed.
How to verify game files in Epic Games Launcher
In the standard Epic launcher, follow these steps:
- Open the launcher and go to Library.
- Find the installed game and select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Manage, then select Verify.
- Wait for validation to finish before trying the game again.
Using Epic’s Early Preview?
Epic documents a separate route for the Early Preview launcher. If your library looks different, use that layout’s controls:
- Select Library in the top bar and click the game.
- Select the three dots next to Play.
- Choose Manage, then Verify.
- Wait for the completion notification, then retry the game.
Epic says verification does not affect saved data. That assurance applies to Epic’s verification process; it is not a reason to delete saves or assume another launcher handles every file the same way.
How to repair game files in the EA app
For an installed game that will not load, the EA app provides a repair command in the game tile’s menu.
- Launch the EA app and open Library.
- Find the game and select the three-dot menu on its tile.
- Choose Repair.
- Wait for the repair to finish, then try launching the game.
If the game still will not launch
Keep the exact error message and note whether the repair finished successfully. A failed check and a successful check followed by the same crash give support different starting points.
For EA games, the official troubleshooting page also identifies background apps as a possible source of trouble. Repairing files alone does not rule out software conflicts.
Use the game’s own support page for the next step, especially if only one title is affected. Tell support your launcher, the error text, and the result of the file check before attempting a full reinstall.
