Halo: Combat Evolved turns 25 on November 15, 2026. The shooter came out the same day as the first Xbox in North America, and many players still remember it as the reason to own the console.

Here is where the game came from, what made it feel new, how well it sold, and how it is still around in 2026.

From a Mac reveal to an Xbox launch game

Halo did not start as an Xbox game. According to Wikipedia, Steve Jobs announced on July 21, 1999, at the Macworld Conference & Expo, that Halo would come to Mac OS and Windows at the same time.

Plans changed fast. Wikipedia says Microsoft announced it was buying Bungie on June 19, 2000, and Microsoft wanted Halo as a launch game for its coming console. Microsoft kept Bungie and the Halo rights, while Take-Two kept the Myth and Oni games.

The game reached stores on November 15, 2001, the same day as the console. Our original Xbox retrospective covers the price and the rest of the launch lineup.

What made it feel different

Wikipedia points to a few rules that shaped how a fight played out:

  • Two weapons only: You can carry just two guns at once, so every pickup is a choice.
  • Shields that recharge: Your shield fills back up if you avoid damage for a short time, so ducking behind a rock really works.
  • Vehicles: The campaign lets you drive everything from armored tanks to alien hovercraft. Wikipedia says the Warthog was inspired by Marcus Lehto’s love of off-roading.
  • Co-op and LAN play: Two players can team up on one screen for the campaign. Up to four players can share a screen, and System Link lets more friends join by connecting up to four consoles.

Putting two Xbox boxes on a table, wiring them together, and playing with a room full of friends was a big part of the game’s story. Wikipedia says the system link setup allowed up to 16 players across consoles.

Sales: the game that sold the console

Halo moved quickly. Wikipedia says one million copies sold about five months after release, and that in the first two months the game sold alongside more than 50% of Xbox consoles.

By November 2005, the game had sold more than six million copies worldwide, which Wikipedia says made it the second best-selling Xbox game at the time. Critics liked it as well. The page calls it a critical and commercial success that is often named among the greatest games ever made.

PC, Mac, and later versions

Halo did get its Windows version. Gearbox Software announced the port on July 12, 2002, and Wikipedia says it came out on September 30, 2003 with online multiplayer. A Mac version followed later in 2003.

Console owners had more ways to play over time. On December 4, 2007, the game became available as a download for Xbox 360. In 2011, 343 Industries released Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for Xbox 360.

The 2026 remake

The story did not stop at the 20th birthday. Video Games Chronicle reports that Halo: Campaign Evolved got a July 28 release date, and Engadget says it launched on PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Halo’s future is changing, too. Microsoft said in September that Activision will develop the next Halo game with a new team.
