Gears of War turns 20 on November 7, 2026. Epic Games made it for the Xbox 360, and it reached North America on November 7, 2006. Here is what made the game feel new, how well it sold, and the ways you can still play it today.

What Made Gears of War Feel Different

Gears of War is a third-person shooter, and it asked you to slow down. The game’s design has players use cover and smart shooting to win fights, so running straight at enemies was a bad plan. Four ideas set it apart:

  • Cover: you duck behind walls and objects, then pop out to shoot.
  • Active reload: tap RB to reload, then tap again at the right moment for a damage bonus.
  • The Lancer: a rifle with a chainsaw bayonet for close-up attacks.
  • Unreal Engine 3: the engine that powered the game, listed on its reference page.

Active reload is a good example of the game’s style. A fast, risky tap paid off, and a missed tap cost you time in the middle of a fight.

Co-Op and Multiplayer

You could play the campaign alone or with a friend. Co-op is a big part of why many people remember it, since two players could split up, cover each other, and share the chainsaw moments. Multiplayer allowed up to eight players, set up as four-on-four matches.

Reviews and Sales

Critics liked it. The Xbox 360 version holds a 94/100 score on Metacritic, and the game won over 30 Game of the Year awards in 2006. Shoppers agreed with the critics. The game sold over 3 million copies within ten weeks and was the fastest-selling video game of 2006.

The Remakes

The PC version was made with People Can Fly and came out in November 2007. It does not support crossplay with the Xbox 360 version, so the two groups of players stayed apart.

The Coalition later made the Ultimate Edition for Xbox One. It runs at a native 1080p, with the campaign at 30 frames per second and multiplayer at 60 frames per second. It adds five single-player chapters and skill-based matchmaking. Its Xbox One score is 82/100 on Metacritic, and the Windows version scored 73/100.

The newest version is Gears of War: Reloaded, announced in May 2025. It runs the campaign at 4K and 60 frames per second and multiplayer at 120 frames per second. It also supports cross-platform multiplayer invites and the co-op campaign. Players who bought Ultimate Edition digitally on Windows or Xbox One before the announcement got it free.
