Crossplay vs. Cross-Progression vs. Cross-Save Explained
Crossplay, cross-progression, and cross-save sound similar, but they solve different problems. Crossplay lets people on different platforms play together. Cross-progression or cross-save lets your progress follow you when you switch platforms. Neither feature automatically gives you another copy of the game.
Publishers do not always use the terms in exactly the same way. A game’s official support page remains the best place to confirm which platforms, purchases, saves, and online modes are included.
The differences at a glance
| Feature | What it does | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | Lets players on different platforms join the same online matches or parties | Shared saves, purchases, ranks, or DLC |
| Cross-progression | Carries account progress, unlocks, ranks, or inventory between supported platforms | Every item, currency, DLC license, or platform |
| Cross-save | Makes one save file or character set available on supported platforms | Ownership of the game or downloadable content |
| Cross-buy | Grants supported platform versions with one purchase | Crossplay or shared progress unless those are listed separately |
What does crossplay mean?
Crossplay is about who can play together. Epic Games defines crossplay as multiplayer that connects major consoles, PCs, and mobile devices on the same server.
A crossplay game may let a PlayStation player join friends on Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, or mobile. Support can still be limited by game mode, console generation, region, or input type. Some competitive games separate controller and mouse players, while others let players turn cross-platform matchmaking off.
Crossplay alone says nothing about your save. You could play with a friend on another platform while keeping separate characters, ranks, and inventory on each system.
What does cross-progression mean?
Cross-progression is about what follows your account. Progress may include your level, rank, unlocked gear, challenges, battle pass progress, or other account data.
Ubisoft’s official guidance describes cross-progression as accessing game progress on any supported platform linked to the same Ubisoft account. Ubisoft also warns that availability varies by game and platform, and you may need to buy the game more than once.
Account linking is usually the bridge between systems. Your PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, or Epic account may need to connect to one publisher account. Progress can appear missing if you sign into the wrong publisher account or link the wrong platform profile.
How is cross-save different?
Cross-save usually describes a narrower version of cross-progression. It focuses on a save file, character, or campaign rather than every part of an online account. Some publishers use “cross-save” and “cross-progression” as if they mean the same thing, so the included data matters more than the label.
Destiny 2 shows why the details matter. Bungie’s Cross Save system lets players choose one active character set for linked platforms. It does not merge characters from several accounts. Bungie also says Cross Save and Cross Play are separate systems.
Moving characters does not automatically move every license. Bungie says Destiny 2 DLC licenses must be purchased on each platform where you want to use them. Disabling Cross Save also creates a 90-day wait before it can be enabled again.
Cross-progression may leave some purchases behind
Shared progress can have platform-specific exceptions. Epic says linked Fortnite accounts share purchased content and progress across supported systems, but some V-Bucks do not move between every platform.
Other games may separate premium currency, console-exclusive items, ranked ladders, or downloadable content. A “cross-progression” label should never be treated as a promise that every purchase transfers.
Cross-buy and Xbox Play Anywhere cover ownership
Cross-buy answers a different question: Do you need to purchase the game again? A cross-buy program grants more than one supported version from a single purchase.
Xbox Play Anywhere is a clear example. Supported digital games can be played on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and supported Windows handhelds at no additional cost. Saves, add-ons, and achievements also follow the same Xbox account.
The Play Anywhere badge applies only to participating digital games. A game can support crossplay or cross-progression without being part of Play Anywhere, which means a second platform may require another purchase.
What to check before switching platforms
- Supported platforms: Confirm the exact console, PC storefront, or mobile version you plan to use.
- Publisher account: Check which central account holds your progress and confirm the email address before linking anything.
- Game ownership: Look for cross-buy, Play Anywhere, or another entitlement program. Cross-progression alone may require a second copy.
- DLC and currency: Read the exclusions for expansions, premium currency, battle passes, and platform-exclusive items.
- Save direction: Some games ask you to choose one primary account or save. Selecting the wrong one can hide your expected progress.
- Unlinking rules: Check cooldowns, relinking restrictions, and recovery options before changing connected accounts.
Common questions
Does crossplay mean my save transfers?
No. Crossplay only confirms that supported platforms can play together. The game must separately support cross-save or cross-progression for your progress to move.
Do I have to buy a cross-progression game twice?
Sometimes. Ubisoft warns that cross-progression can require multiple purchases. A cross-buy program such as Xbox Play Anywhere can include more than one platform version, but only for games marked as supported.
Does DLC transfer with cross-save?
Not always. Destiny 2 characters can move through Cross Save, but Bungie says DLC licenses stay with the platform where they were purchased. Xbox Play Anywhere includes add-ons for participating games, showing why you must check each program.
Are cross-platform and crossplay the same?
Publishers often use the terms together, but “cross-platform” can describe any feature spanning more than one platform. Crossplay specifically refers to multiplayer between platforms.
Before moving to a new system, search the game’s official support site for all four terms. A short feature label on a store page may not explain which saves, purchases, currencies, and modes are actually shared.
