Steam Controller Can Charges Itself With This DIY Project

Ray Foss coded a Steam Controller to self-charge.


The Steam Controller has inspired another creative community project, this time giving it the ability to charge itself. Developer Ray Foss built a setup where the controller can automatically find its charging puck and plug in on its own.

The project works by placing a camera overhead that tracks the Steam Controller’s position. When activated, the controller uses its haptic motors to move toward the charging puck, guided by the camera. After an initial setup, which involves connecting the controller and clicking a few points for the camera to recognize, the system remembers the layout for future charges.

While the concept is mostly a fun proof of what the Steam Controller can do, it does function. The setup can be a bit noisy depending on the surface, and tracking points can be finicky, but the controller successfully moves itself into position and charges automatically.
