Sea of Thieves Is Free to Play This Weekend as Season 21 Begins

Sea of Thieves is opening its seas to everyone for a free play weekend as Season 21 begins.

The free weekend runs through September 21

Rare says the free play period runs from September 17 at 15:00 UTC through September 21 at 17:00 UTC. Gamers can install and play across supported platforms, and an Xbox Game Pass subscription is not required for online play during the event.

The free weekend gives new players a simple way to try the shared-world pirate game before deciding whether to buy it.

Season 21 adds the Parley Pennant

Season 21 adds the Parley Pennant, a permanent flag designed to tell nearby crews that your ship wants to talk. Rare says nearby crews can see the invitation when the pennant is raised, but the other crew still chooses whether to respond.

The Talk Like a Pirate Day event runs from September 17 through September 22. Players who approach three other ships while flying the Parley Pennant can earn the Parley Proficiency Sails.

More events follow during September

Rare’s Events Hub shows Twitch Drops running from September 18 through September 23. The game’s September schedule also includes a Pirate Emporium sale from September 18 through September 21 and Gold & Glory from September 25 through September 28.

Season 21 also focuses on recurring live events and continued improvements to Custom Seas. Players jumping in during the free weekend can start with the new season content and decide later whether they want to keep sailing after September 21.
