PS5 VRR, 120Hz, and ALLM: What Each Setting Does
PS5’s VRR, 120Hz output, and ALLM settings handle different parts of your display connection.
How the Three Settings Differ
| Setting | What It Does | Required Support |
|---|---|---|
| VRR (variable refresh rate) | Lets the display adjust its refresh rate in real time. | A compatible display and supported games. Results vary by TV. |
| 120Hz output | Lets PS5 send a 120Hz video output. | Both the display and game must support it. |
| ALLM (auto low-latency mode) | Makes the TV switch to its low-latency mode during games. | A compatible TV. |
When to Turn a Setting Off
- The Apply to Unsupported Games option extends VRR to other games. Sony recommends disabling that option if unexpected behavior appears.
- Turning on 120Hz output does not mean every game supports that frame rate. Sony recommends turning the setting off if a supported game has video output problems.
- During VRR output, PS5 still triggers the TV’s low-latency mode even when ALLM is Off. To disable that mode completely, set VRR to Off as well.
Check What Your Display Supports
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Information for the Connected HDMI Device shows supported resolution, VRR, and HDR details.
Use Test 1440p Output to test VRR at that resolution.
