Sony will discontinue new disc-based PlayStation games by January 2028.

Sony has officially confirmed in a post that PlayStation is moving to an all-digital future. Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer ship with physical discs. Instead, all titles will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes at retailers.

The announcement follows growing signs of this shift, including the recent release of Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders without a disc in the box. Sony explained that this change reflects a clear trend toward digital media, as gamers increasingly prefer downloads over physical copies.

While disc production will continue for games released before 2028, any titles launching after that date will be digital-only. Sony noted that the move allows them to focus resources on improving access to games and supporting gamer preferences without maintaining physical media production.

According to the official statement, existing PlayStation discs will remain playable, and collectors can continue to enjoy their libraries. However, the shift marks the beginning of the end for new disc-based releases on PlayStation consoles.

📅 Key Timeline

  • 2026: GTA VI launches without a physical disc
  • January 2028: All new PlayStation games become digital-only
  • Existing disc titles remain unaffected

With the price for memory going up, and games becoming bigger, do you think this is a good idea? Do you think this will make the memory shortage worse?
