Nintendo Switch 2 Updated Model

Nintendo is releasing a new Switch 2 model with a removable console battery. The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers also allow users to remove and replace their lithium-ion batteries.

  • Designed to comply with European Union “right to repair” legislation

Release and Regional Availability

The updated Switch 2 will debut first in Europe to meet EU requirements. Nintendo may expand availability if other countries create similar rules.

EU “Right to Repair” Regulation

The European Union introduced its “right to repair” regulation in 2023, with compliance required by February 2027. The plan is to let users keep devices longer by replacing old batteries instead of buying new products.

Industry Context

Other companies have made similar updates to meet repair standards. PlayStation upgraded its DualSense PS5 controllers, and Apple redesigned newer iPhones for easier battery replacement.

Nintendo’s Current Market Situation

Nintendo sells a Japan-only Switch 2 that is cheaper but region-locked. The company said overseas Switch 2 sales were weaker than expected at the end of 2025.

Recent Nintendo Developments

Nintendo has filed a paused lawsuit against the U.S. government over tariffs. The most recent Switch 2 system update improves handheld performance for Switch 1 games, bringing it closer to docked performance.
