Another GPU scam has left a Best Buy customer without their new Asus TUF RTX 5080. The buyer, known as GnarDead on Reddit, opened the box to find rocks instead of the graphics card. The purchase was made from Best Buy, which has refused to replace or refund the order.

The customer filed a complaint right away. Best Buy first said a replacement was on the way. On December 2, the company said its investigation was complete and that they would not provide a replacement or a refund.

Commenters on Reddit shared sympathy and advised the buyer to try a chargeback with their credit card company. The original poster has not shared if they were able to do that or if they used a credit card.

This scam is part of a series of similar incidents in the GPU and CPU market. In June, a buyer found crossbody backpacks inside an RTX 5090 box. Another order contained rice, macaroni, and an old GPU. One buyer received an RTX 5090 with no core or memory chips. A reviewer also ordered a Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU from Amazon but got an AMD FX 4100 with a sticker on it instead. Most of those buyers were able to get a refund or replacement, and it is unclear if GnarDead will succeed in doing the same.
