Nintendo Blocks Dolphin Emulator on Steam: Future Uncertain

Dolphin, the well-known emulator for Wii and GameCube, will soon be available on Steam. The Dolphin Emulator Project team recently announced an indefinite delay for its Steam release. Why, you might wonder? They received a cease and desist letter from none other than Nintendo.

Nintendo invoked the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and asked Valve, the company behind Steam, to remove Dolphin from the platform. As a result, Dolphin is no longer available on Steam. The Dolphin team is exploring its options and promises to share more information soon.

Interestingly, this situation seems more complex than a typical DMCA takedown. Dolphin's former treasurer, Pierre Bourdon, mentioned on Mastodon that this appears to be a legal battle between the two companies rather than a simple copyright issue. Dolphin's DMCA anti-circumvention measures may have caught Nintendo's attention.

So, what does this mean for Dolphin's future? It's uncertain. While Dolphin might not be directly involved in the legal proceedings, Nintendo could take further action. We'll have to wait and see.

For now, Dolphin's arrival on Steam is uncertain. Things will likely work out for Dolphin and its loyal community. What are your thoughts on this situation?
