At WWDC22, Apple revealed some exciting gaming features alongside updates like the redesigned lock screen for iOS and Center Stage for iPad and Mac. Here are the major gaming announcements that will get you excited.

Live Activities

Apple introduced Live Activities, a brand-new API that lets developers create quick and easy ways to check live events. Imagine seeing Overwatch League match stats right on your lock screen! While developers need to integrate this API into their apps, it’s a great way for iPhone users to stay updated without unlocking their phones.

Metal 3

Apple also unveiled Metal 3 at WWDC22. For those unfamiliar, Metal is Apple’s version of DirectX, which is used for gaming on all Apple devices except the Watch.

Two new features were highlighted:

  • MetalFX Upscaling: This allows devices to create smaller, less demanding frames and then upscale them to full resolution.

  • Fast Resource Loading API: This speeds up how quickly your GPU can access game assets, making games load faster.

Background Download API

New updates coming this fall will let apps download files in the background. For example, games like Genshin Impact, which require extra downloads, will now be able to do so while you scroll through TikTok or wait in line at Chipotle!

Game Center

SharePlay is coming to Game Center, making it even easier to join matches and play with friends while on a FaceTime call.

AAA Games Coming to Mac Later This Year!

Apple announced that popular titles like No Man’s SkyResident Evil Village, and GRID Legends will be available on Mac later this year.

Notable Mentions

Buddy controller

Now, you can combine inputs from multiple game controllers into one, allowing a friend or care provider to help you progress in your game.

Game Center Contacts integration

Your Contacts app will now show your friends’ Game Center profiles, making it easy to see what they’re playing and achieving in games.
