Western Digital reported that its hard drive production for 2026 is already fully allocated. The company said major cloud providers have secured large portions of its future supply, with some contracts lasting until 2028.
The demand is driven by the growth of artificial intelligence. Generative AI models, such as chatbots and image generators, require massive amounts of data storage. These workloads measure data in exabytes, which equals one million terabytes. Hard drives remain important because they offer lower cost per gigabyte compared to solid-state drives, making them a practical choice for large-scale cloud storage.
Western Digital confirmed that its top seven customers have placed binding orders and locked in supply deals through 2027 and 2028. This leaves less availability for the consumer market.
Retail buyers may see higher hard drive prices and reduced inventory. The company expects storage demand to stay high as AI infrastructure continues to expand.
