Sony is thinking about delaying the PlayStation 6 launch to 2028 or 2029, according to a Bloomberg report that cites people familiar with the company’s plans. This would be a shift from the previously rumored 2027 release target.
The delay is linked to rising RAM prices and high demand for chips driven by AI, which are affecting hardware costs. Sony has only confirmed that it has enough RAM supply to last through Christmas 2026.
An analyst from MST Financial said the delay would be longer than many expected. Reports from late 2025 had also pointed to a later launch for the PS6.
Microsoft’s next Xbox is still planned for 2027, according to AMD CEO Lisa Su. Nintendo is thinking about raising the price of the Switch 2 in 2026, and the Switch 2 helped create a surplus of RAM in 2025.
Sony first planned to release the PS6 in 2027 to keep players engaged between console generations. Pushing the release to 2028 or 2029 would disrupt that schedule.
