Sony Opens the PS5 SSD Bay: What You Need to Know

Sony is unlocking the SSD bay in the PS5 through a software update, but there are strict rules about which drives can be used.
Must-Haves for Your PS5 SSD
Type: M.2
Interface: Must use NVMe Gen. 4 or newer
Storage: 256GB to 4TB
Read Speed: At least 5,500MB/s
Cooling: Must have a heatsink, as the drive slot isn't ventilated
Size Requirements
Height: Max 11.25mm (including the heatsink), with 8mm above and 2.45mm below
Weight: Max 25mm (including the heatsink)
Length: Can be 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, or 110mm
Must-Nots
Type: Can't be M.2 SATA
Features: Can't have Host Memory Buffer (HMB)
Optional Features
The drive can be single-sided or double-sided.
