Update (8/13/2021): We added a new drive!

Sony is unlocking the SSD bay in the PS5 through a software update, but there are strict rules about which drives can be used.

Must-Haves for Your PS5 SSD

  • Type: M.2

  • Interface: Must use NVMe Gen. 4 or newer

  • Storage: 256GB to 4TB

  • Read Speed: At least 5,500MB/s

  • Cooling: Must have a heatsink, as the drive slot isn't ventilated

Size Requirements

  • Height: Max 11.25mm (including the heatsink), with 8mm above and 2.45mm below

  • Weight: Max 25mm (including the heatsink)

  • Length: Can be 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, or 110mm

Must-Nots

  • Type: Can't be M.2 SATA

  • Features: Can't have Host Memory Buffer (HMB)

Optional Features

  • The drive can be single-sided or double-sided.

Now that you know the rules, here are some drives that work with the PS5. We'll keep this list updated as more options become available. Right now, we're focusing on drives with heatsinks because they're more convenient.
